Mykonos Dark Secret vs Inferno: Winter Cherry or Summer Spice?

Mykonos Dark Secret vs Inferno: Winter Cherry or Summer Spice? - Mykonos

Quick answer: Mykonos Dark Secret and Mykonos Inferno are both strong, unisex fruity extraits with a spiced heart, and both come in 100 ml. Dark Secret is the sweet, creamy one for autumn and winter: black cherry and saffron, cinnamon and praline, sandalwood at the base. Inferno is the drier one for summer: caramelised pineapple, blackcurrant and grapefruit, then clove, ginger and cardamom over patchouli, oakmoss and vetiver.

Mykonos Dark Secret vs Inferno is a comparison between two perfumes that take fruit and spice equally seriously and then aim them at opposite seasons. If you like warm spice with fruit on top, both will interest you; which one you reach for depends on the weather and on how sweet you like it. We stock both, so we have no reason to steer you either way, and a note list is only a guide to how a scent behaves on skin.

What they have in common

Both belong to the Mykonos fruity family, and Dark Secret also sits in the woody and vanilla family. Both are extraits de parfum with a strong intensity rating, both are labelled unisex, both come in 100 ml only and both are tagged for evenings and special occasions. Inferno is part of the Sunforged collection, the line that comes in 100 ml only.

They share five notes: bergamot at the top, nutmeg in the heart, and amber, musk and tonka bean in the base. More than the single notes, they share a structure: fruit first, a heart built on spice, and a warm base underneath.

Their inspirations point in different directions. Mykonos Dark Secret is inspired by Kilian Angels' Share, and Mykonos Inferno is inspired by Creed Aventus Absolu, as their product pages state. Our explainer on what "inspired by" means on a perfume sets out what those lines do and do not tell you.

Mykonos Dark Secret vs Inferno: the notes side by side

Both pyramids come from the Mykonos handbook. It gives no sillage, projection or longevity figures for Inferno, so we leave those cells open rather than guess.

The opening

Dark Secret opens with black cherry and saffron, with bergamot for lift: deep and rich from the start. Inferno opens with caramelised pineapple, blackcurrant, grapefruit and bergamot, which is brighter, juicier and sharper. Both use bergamot, but Inferno's opening is the one with the fresh, sunny side.

The heart

Both hearts are built on spice, and nutmeg is in each. Dark Secret adds cinnamon, praline, jasmine and marigold, which makes it sweet and close to dessert. Inferno adds clove, ginger, cardamom and rose, which is drier and more aromatic. The same idea, spice around fruit, reads warm and sugary in one and brisk in the other.

The drydown

Amber, musk and tonka carry both to the end. Dark Secret adds sandalwood for a smooth, creamy finish that Mykonos calls sensual. Inferno adds patchouli, oakmoss, vetiver and ambroxan, a darker, mossier and earthier base; Mykonos describes it as summer freshness with a darker burn. This is the biggest practical difference once the first hour has passed.

Where they differ

  • Season. Dark Secret is listed for autumn and winter, Inferno for summer.
  • Sweetness. Dark Secret has praline and black cherry, and Mykonos lists its character as sweet, warm spicy and woody. Inferno's sweetness comes from caramelised pineapple, and the moss and vetiver dry it out.
  • Type of spice. Saffron, cinnamon and nutmeg in Dark Secret; clove, nutmeg, ginger and cardamom in Inferno. Our guide to spicy perfumes explains how each one behaves.
  • Base. Creamy sandalwood against oakmoss, vetiver and patchouli.
  • Everyday wear. Inferno is also tagged for daily wear; Dark Secret is kept for evenings and special occasions.

Which one should you choose?

  • Winter evenings and festive dinners: Dark Secret.
  • Summer nights out: Inferno, the one listed for summer.
  • You find gourmand scents too sweet: Inferno, with no praline and a mossy, earthy base.
  • You love cherry: Dark Secret. Our cherry perfume guide covers the other Mykonos cherries too.
  • One of each: because they share bergamot, nutmeg, amber, musk and tonka, the pair works as a winter and a summer version of the same fruity, spiced style.
  • Dark Secret's warmth with tropical fruit: Mykonos Dreamscape. We compare it with Dark Secret in Dreamscape vs Dark Secret and with Inferno in Dreamscape vs Inferno.

Wearing Dark Secret and Inferno

Dark Secret is rated strong for sillage and projection with 12+ hours, so two sprays on the neck and chest are plenty for an evening. Inferno has a strong intensity rating too; in summer heat, start with one or two sprays and add more only if you need to. Both come in 100 ml.

Mykonos also pairs Inferno with Mykonos Glitch in its official Smoked Pineapple layering combo, which we cover in how to layer Inferno and Glitch. At the time of writing, Inferno has 8 reviews averaging 4.75 out of 5, and Dark Secret has one.
