How Many Sprays of Perfume? A Simple Rule for Extraits and EDPs - Mykonos

Quick answer: Two to three sprays of perfume is the right amount for most people and most extraits de parfum. Use one or two for the office or with a scent rated strong for sillage and projection, and three or four for a light eau de parfum or a fresh citrus in the open air. With a concentrated perfume, more than five sprays is rarely needed.

How many sprays of perfume you need depends on three things: how concentrated the fragrance is, how far it carries, and where you are going. Almost everything we sell is an extrait de parfum, the most concentrated category, so advice written with lighter concentrations in mind tends to lead to over-spraying. Here is the rule of thumb we give our customers, with the reasoning behind it.

How many sprays of perfume: the quick table

Situation Extrait, rated strong Extrait, moderate Lighter eau de parfum
Office or close quarters 1 1-2 2
Everyday, out and about 1-2 2-3 3
Evening or special occasion 2 3 3-4
Outdoors in warm weather 1 2-3 3-4
Cold weather, under layers 2-3 3 4

"Rated strong" means a fragrance whose sillage and projection are both rated Strong in the Mykonos brand handbook. "Moderate" covers scents rated Moderate or Moderate to strong. Treat the numbers as a starting point, and adjust by one spray either way after a few wears.

Why an extrait needs fewer sprays

An extrait de parfum contains a higher proportion of perfume oil than an eau de parfum, so each spray delivers more fragrance. Two sprays of an extrait can do the work of four of a lighter concentration. The catch is that concentrated perfumes often sit a little closer to the skin in the first hour, because alcohol is what throws scent into the air. That can tempt you to add more, when what you are really noticing is a scent that stays near you and lasts. We explain the difference in extrait de parfum vs eau de parfum, and you can browse the whole extrait de parfum collection.

The label matters less than how the scent carries

Two extraits can behave very differently. Base-heavy compositions of amber, woods, vanilla and musk carry further and longer than bright citrus, even at the same concentration. That is why we look at the handbook ratings for sillage, the trail you leave, and projection, how far the scent radiates, before suggesting a number. Both terms are explained in sillage and projection explained.

One or two sprays: the powerhouses

Mykonos Aphrodite is rated strong for both sillage and projection, with a rated longevity of 12+ hours: jasmine, burnt cinnamon and myrrh over cedarwood, sandalwood, tobacco and vanilla. Mykonos Cafe Drops sits in the same bracket, with coffee, caramel, tonka bean and milk over amber and patchouli. With scents like these, one spray on the chest and one on the back of the neck is plenty for an evening, and a single spray is enough for the daytime.

Two or three sprays: the everyday middle

Mykonos Slow Living, with Amalfi lemon, neroli and lavender over musk and cedarwood, is rated moderate for sillage and moderate to strong for projection. It is designed to feel clean and easy, so two or three sprays give it enough presence without tipping into heavy.

Three or four sprays: light and airy

Mykonos Baby Love is one of the few eaux de parfum in our range and the lightest in intensity: violet, rose and musk that sit softly around you. This is the kind of scent where a third or fourth spray is perfectly reasonable. The small eau de parfum collection has a few more in this category.

What one spray actually is

A single spray delivers roughly 0.1 ml, so a 50 ml bottle holds around 500 sprays. That makes the arithmetic simple:

  • One spray a day: a 50 ml bottle lasts well over a year.
  • Three sprays a day: about five and a half months.
  • Five sprays a day: a little over three months.

If you rotate several perfumes, each bottle lasts proportionally longer. Our 50 ml or 100 ml guide has the full table and helps you pick a size you will actually finish.

Signs you are wearing too much, or too little

You are the worst judge of your own perfume. Within minutes your nose adapts and the scent seems to fade, even though everyone around you can still smell it. That is the main reason people over-spray, and we explain what is going on in why you stop smelling your own perfume. Better signals come from outside:

  • Too much: people comment on it before you reach them, it fills a lift long after you have stepped out, or a colleague can tell which desk you sat at.
  • Too little: someone standing at arm's length half an hour after you applied it cannot smell anything, even in a quiet room.
  • About right: people notice it when they come close, hug you or pass behind you, and it is still there on your scarf or collar in the evening.

Adjusting for the day

  • Heat. Warm skin and warm air make fragrance lift faster and carry further, so drop a spray in summer, particularly with rich scents. Our guide to choosing perfume by season covers which styles suit hot weather.
  • Offices and public transport. One or two sprays, ideally on the chest under clothing. See our best perfumes for the office.
  • Training and sport. Keep it to one light spray of something fresh, or wait until after the shower. Our guide to perfume for sport and the gym has suggestions.
  • Evenings. You can go up by a spray, but placement matters more than volume; see where to apply perfume. For warmer evening scents, our date-night perfumes guide has ideas.

Frequently asked questions

How many sprays of an extrait de parfum should I use?

Two to three for most extraits, and one or two if the scent is rated strong for sillage and projection or you will be in close quarters. Extraits contain more perfume oil per spray, so they need less than lighter concentrations.

Is ten sprays of perfume too much?

With an extrait, almost always. Ten sprays is roughly a millilitre of concentrated fragrance, which will reach well beyond your personal space. If you feel you need that many, it is more likely that your nose has adapted than that the perfume is weak.

How many sprays of perfume for the office?

One or two, applied to the chest or another spot under clothing so the scent is released gently. Fresh and moderate scents are the easiest choice for shared spaces.

Should I reapply perfume during the day?

Only if it has genuinely faded, not just because you have stopped noticing it. Ask someone you trust first. If you do top up, one spray is enough, and our guide on how to make perfume last longer has ways to avoid needing to.
