Mykonos Empire vs Nautilus: Tropical Citrus or Juicy Pear?

Mykonos Empire vs Nautilus: Tropical Citrus or Juicy Pear? - Mykonos

Quick answer: Mykonos Empire and Mykonos Nautilus start in almost the same place, with bergamot, mandarin and ginger, and both keep jasmine in the heart and musk in the base. Then they split. Empire turns tropical, with lime, coconut water and a patchouli and tonka base, and is listed for every season; Nautilus builds on pear, orange blossom, vanilla and amber, is rated strong and is made for summer.

Mykonos Empire vs Nautilus is a real choice if you want one fresh, fruit-led extrait and like the look of both. They share five notes, yet they end up in different places: one is a year-round tropical citrus labelled masculine, the other a unisex summer scent built around pear. We sell both, so we are not neutral about Mykonos, but we have nothing to gain from pushing you towards one of the two; and a note list never tells you exactly how a perfume will wear on your skin.

What they have in common

Five notes appear in both pyramids. Bergamot and mandarin orange sit at the top of each; ginger is at the top of Nautilus and in the heart of Empire; jasmine is in both hearts; and both bases have musk, white musk in the case of Empire.

Beyond the notes, both are extraits de parfum in the citrus family, both are tagged for daily wear and evenings, and summer is on both calendars. Their starting points differ: Mykonos Empire is inspired by Creed Virgin Island Water and Louis Vuitton Afternoon Swim, and Mykonos Nautilus is inspired by Ex Nihilo Blue Talisman Extrait and Eau de Parfum. Our explainer on what "inspired by" means on a perfume covers how to read those lines.

Mykonos Empire vs Nautilus: the notes side by side

Both pyramids come from the Mykonos brand handbook, which gives no sillage, projection or longevity figures for Nautilus.

The opening: the same citrus, a different fruit

Bergamot and mandarin open both. Empire adds lime and tropical fruits, so its start is sharp and holiday-bright. Nautilus adds pear and ginger, so its start is juicier and rounder, with a little warmth straight away. On paper, pear is the note that separates the two openings.

The heart: coconut water or orange blossom

Empire keeps its citrus going with Sicilian orange and brings in ginger, jasmine and coconut water, which gives the heart a light tropical feel. Nautilus repeats its pear and pairs it with orange blossom and jasmine, a softer fruity-floral middle. Jasmine is the one heart note they share.

The base: tonka, or vanilla and amber

Empire ends on three notes, patchouli, white musk and tonka bean, which Mykonos calls a timeless signature. Nautilus has a fuller base of amber, musk, vanilla, guaiac wood and ambroxan, and the brand describes it drying into warm guaiac wood and amber. Nautilus finishes warmer and sweeter; Empire keeps a cleaner line.

Where they differ

  • The fruit. Empire's fruit is lime, mandarin, Sicilian orange and tropical fruits, with coconut water. Nautilus is built on pear, which appears in both its top and its heart.
  • Strength. Mykonos rates Nautilus strong in intensity and Empire moderate. Empire's handbook figures are strong sillage, strong projection and 12+ hours; none are listed for Nautilus.
  • Season. Empire is listed for all four seasons. Nautilus is tagged for summer only.
  • Occasion. Empire carries a sport tag, Nautilus a special-occasion tag.
  • Audience and sizes. Empire is labelled masculine and comes in 50 ml and 100 ml. Nautilus is unisex and, as part of the Sunforged collection, comes in 100 ml only.

Which one should you choose?

  • One bottle for the whole year: Empire, the one of the two listed for every season.
  • Summer holidays and dressed-up evenings: Nautilus, strong and tagged for summer and special occasions.
  • The gym or an active weekend: Empire, which carries the sport tag.
  • You like vanilla and amber under a fresh opening: Nautilus. If you prefer a cleaner finish without vanilla, Empire.
  • Starting small: Empire comes in 50 ml; Nautilus only in 100 ml.

Can you layer them?

On paper they suit each other: with bergamot, mandarin, ginger, jasmine and musk in common, the joins should be smooth, and the vanilla and amber in Nautilus give Empire's clean base more warmth. This pairing is our suggestion, not an official combo. The brand's own pairing for Empire is Golden Sunset, with the pear-led Mykonos Monaco Royale. For Empire and Nautilus, try one spray of Nautilus on the chest and one of Empire on the neck. Our guide on how to layer perfume has the general rules.

Wearing them: bottles, sizes and sprays

Empire is the Mykonos collaboration with RRQ and now ships in the gold IMPERIUM bottle, with the scent unchanged, as we explain in Mykonos Empire vs Imperium. With strong sillage and projection, two sprays are enough for most days, one on a hot one. Nautilus belongs to the Sunforged collection; because it is rated strong, start with one or two sprays.

At the time of writing, Empire has 108 reviews averaging 4.73 out of 5 and Nautilus 15 reviews averaging 4.47. Frequently asked questions

Is Mykonos Empire stronger than Nautilus?

On the intensity scale, no: Mykonos rates Nautilus strong and Empire moderate. Empire has strong sillage and projection in the handbook, but none are listed for Nautilus, so intensity is the only like-for-like measure.

Which lasts longer, Empire or Nautilus?

Empire's listed longevity is 12+ hours. Mykonos gives no longevity figure for Nautilus, so we cannot compare the two on paper.

Which is better for summer?

Both are tagged for summer. Nautilus is the one built for it, with summer as its only season. Empire is the pick if you want the same bottle to carry on into autumn and winter, or if you prefer lime and coconut water to pear and vanilla.

Can women wear Mykonos Empire?

Of course. Mykonos labels Empire masculine and Nautilus unisex, but labels are a guide, not a rule. If you want the label to match, Nautilus is the unisex one of the two.
