Mykonos Empire vs Sorrento: Tropical Citrus or Fizzy Grapefruit?

Mykonos Empire vs Sorrento: Tropical Citrus or Fizzy Grapefruit? - Mykonos

Quick answer: Mykonos Empire and Mykonos Sorrento are close on paper: both are moderate citrus extraits labelled masculine, in 50 ml and 100 ml, sharing bergamot, mandarin, ginger, patchouli and musk. Empire goes tropical, with lime, coconut water and tonka, and is listed for every season. Sorrento runs fizzy grapefruit through all three tiers, adds neroli, powdery notes and orris, and is the summer office scent of the two.

Mykonos Empire vs Sorrento is the comparison for someone who already knows they want a fresh citrus for him and has it down to two bottles. On the label they look alike: same family, same concentration, same stated intensity, same sizes. The differences are in the character, and they matter more than the label suggests. We sell both, so we are not neutral about Mykonos, but we have no reason to steer you one way; and notes on paper never tell you exactly how a scent will wear on your skin.

What they have in common

Five notes appear in both. Bergamot and mandarin orange open each one; ginger is in both, at the top and in the heart of Sorrento and in the heart of Empire; and both bases have patchouli and musk, white musk in the case of Empire. Both are citrus-family extraits de parfum labelled masculine, both are rated moderate in intensity with strong projection, and both are tagged for daily wear, evenings and summer.

They come from different starting points. Mykonos Empire is inspired by Creed Virgin Island Water and Louis Vuitton Afternoon Swim; Mykonos Sorrento is inspired by Sospiro Vibrato and Goldfield & Banks Ingenious Ginger. If those lines are new to you, read what "inspired by" means on a perfume.

One citrus, or a relay of citrus

Sorrento is built around a single idea: fizzy grapefruit appears in its top, heart and base, so the sparkle is meant to last. Empire works as a relay instead. Lime, bergamot, mandarin and tropical fruits open it, Sicilian orange takes over in the heart, and then the citrus hands over to the base.

Tropical and soft, or clean and powdery

The hearts show the real split. Empire puts jasmine, ginger and coconut water around its orange, which gives it a tropical, lightly sweet middle. Sorrento puts neroli, ginger, powdery notes and water notes around its grapefruit, which reads cleaner and cooler, and there is already a touch of magnolia at the top.

The drydown

Empire finishes on patchouli, white musk and tonka bean, short and slightly sweet. Sorrento has a longer base: grapefruit again, with amber, musk, cedar, patchouli and orris root. Mykonos calls Sorrento clean, elegant and quietly confident, and the orris gives its drydown a dry, powdery edge that Empire does not have.

Where they differ

  • Sweetness. Empire has tonka, coconut water and tropical fruits. Sorrento lists no tonka or vanilla; its warmth comes from amber, set among cedar, musk and orris.
  • Powder. Sorrento has powdery notes and orris root; Empire has neither.
  • Trail and staying power. Both have strong projection, but Empire's sillage is rated strong and Sorrento's moderate to strong. Listed longevity is 12+ hours for Empire and 10+ hours for Sorrento.
  • Office or gym. Sorrento is tagged for work, Empire for sport.
  • Season. Empire is listed for all four seasons; Sorrento for summer.

Wearing them: sizes and sprays

Both come in 50 ml and 100 ml, so size will not decide it for you. Empire, the Mykonos collaboration with RRQ, now ships in the gold IMPERIUM bottle with the scent unchanged; see Mykonos Empire vs Imperium. With its strong sillage, two sprays are a good start. Sorrento can take two or three for an evening and one or two for the office. Our guide to how many sprays of perfume has the general rule.

At the time of writing, Empire has 108 reviews averaging 4.73 out of 5 and Sorrento 47 averaging 4.64. For each one on its own, read the Mykonos Empire review and the Mykonos Sorrento review. A third option in the same space is Mykonos Inception, the citrus with black tea and woods, which we set against both in Empire vs Inception and Inception vs Sorrento.
