How to store perfume so it does not turn

Perfume is a solution of volatile aromatic compounds in alcohol. Three things break it down: light, heat and oxygen. Get those under control and a bottle will stay good for years. Ignore them and an expensive fragrance can turn within a single summer.

The worst place is the bathroom

It is where nearly everyone keeps perfume, and it is the single worst room in the house. A shower takes the temperature from roughly 20°C to over 30°C and the humidity close to saturation, several times a day. That repeated heat and moisture cycling accelerates oxidation far more than a steady warm room would.

A bedroom drawer, a wardrobe or a cupboard away from a radiator is better in every respect.

The four rules

Keep it dark

Ultraviolet light breaks down aromatic molecules and discolours the liquid. This is why so many perfumes ship in tinted glass — but tinted glass slows UV, it does not stop it. A sunny windowsill will damage a fragrance in months. Keeping the box is genuinely useful here, not just for resale.

Keep it cool and steady

Somewhere between 15°C and 20°C is ideal. Stability matters as much as the number: a constant 22°C is kinder than something that swings from 16°C to 28°C daily.

The fridge is a common suggestion and a bad one for everyday bottles. Repeated cold-to-warm cycling every time the door opens, plus condensation inside the bottle, does more harm than a cool drawer. A dedicated wine fridge at a steady temperature is fine; the kitchen fridge is not.

Keep it closed and upright

Cap on, every time. Store upright so the liquid is not sitting against the seal, which can degrade it and cause seepage.

Do not decant unless you have to

Every transfer introduces air. Travel atomisers are useful, but fill them for the trip rather than keeping a fragrance in one long-term. Never decant into a clear container.

Why a half-empty bottle ages faster

This one is counter-intuitive. As a bottle empties, the space above the liquid fills with air, and more air means more oxygen in contact with the perfume. The last quarter of a bottle will oxidise noticeably faster than the first quarter did.

It is a practical argument for the smaller size on anything you wear rarely — see 50 ml or 100 ml.

How to tell a fragrance has turned

  • A sour or metallic opening. Usually the first sign, because the citrus top notes oxidise first.
  • Noticeable darkening. Some deepening over time is normal, particularly with vanilla and amber. A dramatic change is not.
  • The character has flattened. The opening has gone and it smells mostly of alcohol and base.

Citrus-forward compositions turn soonest, which is worth knowing if you keep things like Slow Living or Sorrento for a long time. Heavy bases last longest — a woody or vanilla extrait such as Senja or Aphrodite is far more forgiving. Browse Woody & Vanilla.

Shipping and cold weather

A parcel that has spent a winter night in a van will be cold on arrival. That is not a problem: let it come back to room temperature before spraying, and it will smell exactly as intended. Cold does not damage perfume; repeated cycling does.
