Quick answer: Perfume tends to fade faster on dry skin and to hold longer, and often read richer, on oilier skin. If scent disappears on you, apply it over an unscented lotion, add a spray on clothing and choose a scent with a high longevity rating. If it gets loud on you, use fewer sprays and a fresher scent with moderate sillage. There is no single best perfume for either skin type, only a better match.
Perfume for oily skin and perfume for dry skin are among the things we are asked about most, usually after a scent that lasted all day on a friend had vanished on the asker by lunchtime. This guide explains how dry and oily skin are commonly said to change how long a fragrance lasts, what to change in the way you apply it, and which scents in our range fit each situation. It is fragrance experience, not skin advice. We are an authorized Mykonos retailer for Europe, and the ratings we quote come from the brand's handbook.
Why perfume lasts differently on oily and dry skin
The usual explanation is that drier skin gives the perfume oil less to hold on to, so the lighter notes evaporate quickly and a scent can seem thinner and shorter-lived. Oilier skin tends to hold fragrance for longer and can make it feel richer or sweeter. Neither is better; they give you two versions of one composition.
Skin is only one variable. Warmth, weather and the other scented products you use shift things just as much, as we explain in why perfume smells different on your skin.
| At a glance | Dry skin | Oily skin |
|---|---|---|
| What many people notice | Scent fades quickly and seems thinner | Scent holds longer and can read richer or sweeter |
| Before you spray | Unscented lotion on the spots you spray | Nothing extra |
| Where to spray | Pulse points, one cooler spot and clothing | Cooler spots, such as the chest under clothing |
| How much | Your usual amount, with one spray on fabric | One spray fewer than usual |
| What to choose | Base-heavy scents with a high longevity rating | Fresher scents with moderate sillage |
How to tell which way your skin leans
You do not need a label for your skin; you need to know how perfume behaves on it. Spray one scent once on your inner wrist and once on a sleeve or a tissue, and smell both at midday and in the evening. If the fabric still smells clearly and your wrist does not, the dry-skin advice applies. If your wrist is still going strong and smells fuller or sweeter than the fabric, follow the oily-skin advice. Many people find the answer shifts between summer and winter.
Perfume for dry skin: how to make it last
- Moisturise first with an unscented lotion. Apply it a minute or two beforehand to the places you spray. It gives the perfume more to hold on to, and unscented means it adds no smell of its own.
- Use pulse points and one cooler spot. Wrists and the base of the throat are warm and lift the scent; the chest or the back of the neck gives a longer tail. More in where to apply perfume.
- Bring clothing in. Fabric holds fragrance far longer than skin. Test a hidden corner first, since some perfumes can mark pale or delicate fabrics.
- Do not simply double the sprays. Two to three is enough for most extraits. Move one of them to fabric, or top up once later in the day; see how many sprays of perfume.
- Choose a scent that is built to last. Woods, amber, vanilla and musk cling; bright citrus is meant to be fleeting.
Three picks from our range with the brand's top longevity rating:
- Mykonos Monaco Royale: pear, melon and green notes over cedarwood, moss, caramel and musk. Listed for spring and summer. Mykonos rates its sillage and projection as strong and its longevity at 12+ hours.
- Mykonos Dreamscape: mango, Italian lemon and rhubarb, then ginger, jasmine and praline, over cedar, grey amber and tonka bean. Listed for autumn and winter. Strong sillage, strong projection and 12+ hours in the handbook.
- Mykonos Penthouse: blackcurrant, aldehydes and white tea over amber, clean musks and cashmeran, listed for all four seasons. Sillage is rated moderate to strong, projection strong and longevity 12+ hours.
How long any of them lasts on you still depends on skin and climate. The full list is in the longest-lasting Mykonos perfumes.
What is the best perfume for oily skin?
There is no single best perfume for oily skin, because the usual issue is the opposite one: scent holds well and can come across heavier or sweeter than you intended. The adjustment is restraint.
- Use one spray fewer. If two fill a room on you, one is your number.
- Spray cooler spots. The chest under clothing releases a scent more gently than the neck and wrists.
- Go fresher. Citrus, clean musks and light florals stay comfortable when a scent reads fuller on you.
Three picks with moderate sillage in the handbook:
- Mykonos Baby Love: an eau de parfum of violet, rose and musk, and the lightest in intensity. Sillage and projection are rated moderate, longevity 9+ hours.
- Mykonos Slow Living: Amalfi lemon, lemon blossom, neroli and lavender over musk and cedarwood. Moderate sillage, moderate to strong projection, 9+ hours.
- Mykonos California Club: bergamot, lemon and violet leaf, then rose, violet and iris, over amberwood, ambrette and sandalwood. Moderate sillage, moderate to strong projection, 9+ hours.
How to choose a fragrance based on skin type
Treat skin type as an adjustment, not a rule. Start with what you like and read the base notes as well as the top, because the base is what you will be living with after the first hour. Then wear the scent for a full day on your own skin before deciding; how to test perfume explains how. If you are choosing without smelling first, our scent finder narrows the range by the styles you already like.
Frequently asked questions
Does perfume last longer on oily skin?
That is the common experience: oilier skin tends to hold fragrance for longer, and it can make a scent read richer or sweeter. It is a tendency, not a guarantee, and warmth and weather matter as much.
Why does perfume not last on my dry skin?
Dry skin is commonly said to give perfume oil less to hold on to, so the lighter notes pass quickly. An unscented lotion under the perfume, a spray on clothing and a base-heavy scent usually help most.
Should I put lotion on before perfume?
If scent fades fast on you, yes. Use an unscented one, so it does not mix a smell of its own into the perfume, and give it a minute or two before you spray.
