Quick answer: A perfume that smells like sunscreen is usually built on coconut, white florals such as frangipani or ylang-ylang, and a warm, creamy base, sometimes with a touch of salt. In our range Mykonos Coconut Dreams and Mykonos Paradise list coconut, Mykonos Marbella lists frangipani and Solar Notes, and Mykonos Empire lists coconut water.
A perfume that smells like sunscreen is easier to find than you might think, because the effect comes from a short list of notes. We are an authorized Mykonos retailer for Europe, and every note, season and rating below comes from the brand's product data and handbook. This guide explains what creates the beach-bag smell, goes through six Mykonos perfumes whose listed notes come closest, and says when to wear them. It is only about how a perfume smells; a perfume is not a sun-care product.
Which notes make a perfume that smells like sunscreen?
Nobody sprays sunscreen for its scent, yet we all recognise it: creamy, a little sweet, a little floral, with the warmth of skin in the sun. Perfumers usually build that picture from four things.
- Coconut. In perfume it reads creamy and milky rather than like the hard shell, and it is the most direct route to the beach-bag smell.
- White florals. Frangipani, ylang-ylang and jasmine give the lush, creamy flower that sits behind many sun creams.
- A warm, soft base. Vanilla, musk and soft woods stretch the sweetness out and make it feel like warm skin.
- Salt or sea air. Salty and marine notes move the picture from the bottle of lotion to the beach itself.
The sun-cream smell in perfume is also commonly attributed to salicylates, a family of aroma materials. Mykonos publishes notes, not formulas, so we cannot say whether any Mykonos perfume contains them. We work only from the listed notes.
Six Mykonos perfumes with sunscreen and beach notes
All six are extrait de parfum and list at least one of these notes. Sillage, projection and longevity are the brand's handbook ratings; how long a scent lasts on you depends on skin and climate.
Mykonos Coconut Dreams: the most direct coconut
Mykonos Coconut Dreams is the closest match on paper. Coconut, aloe vera and lily of the valley open it, coconut cream, vanilla and sweet rice form the heart, and vanilla and cashmere wood close it. The brand calls it a tropical gourmand and not your typical tropical summer scent: think coconut ice cream and vanilla at sunset. Listed for summer and winter, for daily wear and evenings. Mykonos rates its sillage as moderate, its projection as moderate to strong and its longevity at 8+ hours. Listed in 50 ml.
Mykonos Paradise: coconut, frangipani and pineapple
Mykonos Paradise adds the flower. Coconut, mandarin orange, pear and pineapple open it; frangipani, jasmine and lily form the heart; amber, vanilla and a woody note finish. It is juicier and less creamy than Coconut Dreams, and the brand describes a piña colada among frangipani trees. More fruit is in our guide to pineapple and mango perfumes. Listed for summer only, for daily wear and evenings. The handbook gives it moderate sillage, moderate to strong projection and 9+ hours. Listed in 50 ml.
Mykonos Marbella: frangipani and Solar Notes
Mykonos Marbella has no coconut, yet it may be the most sun-on-skin scent of the six. Orange, lemon, passionfruit and mango open it; frangipani, Solar Notes and blackcurrant form the heart; vanilla, benzoin, musk and labdanum make the base. The brand says it glows on the skin long after the sun has gone. Listed for summer, for daily wear and evenings. Mykonos gives no rating for its sillage, projection or longevity. Listed in 50 ml and 100 ml.
Mykonos Empire: coconut water, lighter and cleaner
Mykonos Empire is the one to try if coconut should be a whisper. Lime, bergamot, mandarin orange and tropical fruits open it; Sicilian orange, ginger, jasmine and coconut water form the heart; patchouli, white musk and tonka bean close it. The coconut water sits under citrus, so it reads fresh, not creamy. Listed for all four seasons, for daily wear, evenings and sport. Mykonos rates its sillage and projection as strong and its longevity at 12+ hours. Listed in 50 ml and 100 ml.
Mykonos Luminos: white florals and a solar accord
Mykonos Luminos has no coconut either. Its link to the theme is a Solar Accord in the base and a heart of white florals, rose, tuberose, lily of the valley, orange blossom and vanilla, under apple and a banana accord. The result is creamy and bright rather than beachy. Listed for spring and summer, for daily wear and evenings. Mykonos rates its sillage and projection as strong and its longevity at 12+ hours. Listed in 50 ml.
Mykonos California Blue: the salty side
Mykonos California Blue covers the sea rather than the lotion: lavender, pear, grapefruit and pink salt on top, rhubarb, water blossoms and marine notes in the heart, moss, soft wood and caramel underneath. Listed for summer, for daily wear, evenings and sport. Mykonos rates its sillage as moderate to strong, its projection as strong and its longevity at 10+ hours. Listed in 15 ml, 50 ml and 100 ml; the product page shows which can be ordered. For more salty scents, see fresh and aquatic fragrances compared.
Two more scents that list such notes but read differently
Mykonos Untamed lists a coconut soap accord, but it reads clean and milky rather than beachy; see perfume that smells clean. Mykonos Reflection Elixir lists ylang-ylang in its heart, but grapefruit, bergamot and ginger frame it, so it reads citrus-floral, not creamy.

When to wear a sunscreen-scented perfume
Paradise, Marbella and California Blue are listed for summer only, and Luminos for spring and summer. Coconut Dreams is listed for summer and winter, which fits its vanilla base, and Empire for all four seasons. Heat tends to make any scent carry further, and creamy coconut and vanilla can turn heavy in a heatwave, so use one spray fewer. Frequently asked questions
What perfume smells like sunscreen?
By listed notes, the closest are Coconut Dreams (coconut and coconut cream) and Paradise (coconut and frangipani). For a lighter, cleaner coconut try Empire, which lists coconut water, and for the salty beach side California Blue, which lists pink salt.
Can a perfume smell like sunscreen without coconut?
Yes. Marbella has no coconut, but its frangipani and Solar Notes give a sunlit, creamy-floral effect, and Luminos does something similar with white florals and a Solar Accord.
Is a sunscreen perfume only for summer?
No rule says so. Paradise, Marbella and California Blue are listed for summer only, but Coconut Dreams is listed for summer and winter and Empire for all four seasons. A season listing tells you where a scent performs most easily, not when you may wear it.
Does a coconut perfume last long?
Mykonos rates the longevity of Coconut Dreams at 8+ hours and Paradise at 9+ hours. How long a scent lasts on you depends on skin and climate. Mykonos gives no rating for Marbella.
