It can mean the crackle of burning wood, the cool haze of incense, the bitter-sweet glow of a resin or the honeyed dryness of tobacco leaf. What makes a perfume smell smoky?
Smoked wood
The most literal smoke. Perfumers build it from materials with a tarry, campfire character, and often pair it with guaiac wood, a wood note that has a naturally smoky facet. Expect something dry, toasty and a little sharp at first, softening over time.
Incense
Incense smells cooler and more airy than wood smoke: peppery, slightly citrusy and resinous, like the haze in an old stone building. It adds atmosphere more than heat.
Myrrh
Myrrh is a resin with a bitter-sweet, balsamic smell and a faintly earthy edge. It is less smoky than incense on its own, but it gives a scent that dark, glowing, "something has been burning" warmth.
Tobacco
Tobacco in perfume means the dried leaf, not an ashtray. It smells honeyed, hay-like and a little spicy, and it brings a dry, lived-in warmth to a base.

Resin and tobacco. Jasmine, burnt cinnamon and myrrh open; cedarwood, tonka bean and sandalwood form the heart; white musk, tobacco, vanilla and mineral amber finish. The smoke is quieter than in Bonfire Vanilla: a burnt, resinous glow at the start from the myrrh and cinnamon, then a dry tobacco warmth in the base. Mykonos On The Rocks
Smoke as a whisper. Crisp bergamot, apple and myrrh open; orange flower, guaiac wood and praline form the heart; vanilla, ambroxan and praline finish. The myrrh and guaiac give a resinous, slightly smoky edge to what is really a boozy amber cocktail. A good first step if full smoke feels like too much. Mykonos Hawaiian Crush
Incense at sunset. Lychee, red fruits and black tea open; rose, lily of the valley, lychee and black tea form the heart; amber, patchouli, musk and incense finish. The fruit comes first and the incense only shows in the drydown, giving the sweetness a hazy, slightly mysterious finish. This is the lightest smoky option here: Moderate in intensity, unisex, and listed for spring, summer and autumn, for daily wear and evenings. Smoke-adjacent: roasted, resinous and smouldering
