What Does Musk Smell Like? White Musk Explained

Quick answer: Musk smells soft, clean and slightly sweet, like warm skin, fresh laundry or cotton, often with a powdery edge. The musks used in perfumery today are synthetic aroma materials, and "white musk" is the name for the cleanest, most laundry-like kind. Musk sits in the base of a perfume, so it is usually what you still smell at the end of the day.

What does musk smell like? It is one of the most common words on a note list and one of the hardest to picture, because musk is not a flower, a fruit or a wood you can point to. It is in the pyramid of 45 of the 77 Mykonos perfumes in our store. This guide explains what musk and white musk are, how the note behaves in a composition and how it shows up in six Mykonos scents. We are an authorized Mykonos retailer for Europe; the notes and ratings come from the brand's product data and handbook, and the rest is general perfumery knowledge.

What does musk smell like?

Musk has several sides, and most musky perfumes show more than one of them:

  • Clean: freshly washed cotton, soap, a shirt straight from the line.
  • Skin-like: the warm, faintly sweet smell of clean skin up close.
  • Powdery: soft and dry, like cosmetic powder.
  • Creamy: a light milky or fruity sweetness.

What musk never does is shout. People rarely say a perfume "smells of musk"; they say it smells clean, soft or comforting.

What is musk in perfume?

The word is older than the materials. It originally named an animal-derived ingredient of traditional perfumery; the musks used in perfumery today are synthetic aroma materials, a whole group of them, each with its own nuance. On a note list, "musk" therefore names an effect rather than one ingredient, and brands choose the wording that fits the impression. In our range you will find "musk", "white musk", "clean musks" and "cashmere musk". Our fragrance notes glossary lists more terms.

What is white musk?

White musk is perfumery's name for the bright, clean side of the family: cottony, soapy and gently sweet, without darker warmth. It is what gives "fresh laundry" and "just out of the shower" scents their texture. "Clean musks" means the same idea; "cashmere musk" suggests something a little warmer and more like soft fabric.

How musk behaves in a perfume

Musk materials evaporate slowly, which is why musk is almost always listed in the base. It is still there when the citrus and most of the florals have gone; our guide to top, heart and base notes explains that order. Along the way it does three things. It rounds off sharp edges, so citrus feels smoother and sweetness less sticky. It gives light notes something to hold on to, which is why nearly every fresh scent has musk underneath. And it stays close to the skin, readable at arm's length rather than across a room.

One more thing is worth knowing: many people find that they smell certain musks only faintly, and the nose tunes out a soft, constant scent quickly. If your musky perfume seems to vanish, others may still notice it. We explain that effect in why you can't smell your own perfume.

How musk shows up in the Mykonos range

Musk appears in the pyramid of 45 of our 77 perfumes, nearly always in the base. What changes is what it is paired with.

Perfume Musk as listed Paired with Effect
Penthouse Clean musks (base) Aldehydes, white soap accord, white tea vapour Soapy, just-bathed
Baby Love Musk (top and base) Violet, rose Powdery and soft
Empire White musk (base) Lime, bergamot, coconut water, patchouli Clean finish under citrus
Inception Musk (base) Black tea, guaiac wood, cedarwood Smooth, woody finish
Sorrento Musk (base) Fizzy grapefruit, amber, cedar, orris root Quiet, polished citrus
Milk Drops White musk (base) Milk, tonka bean, white wood Milky and cosy

Musk as the main theme

Mykonos Penthouse is the clearest example. Mykonos lists its main accord as musky, fruity and powdery, and the clean musks in the base carry the soap and white tea of the heart for the rest of the wear. Mykonos rates its longevity at 12+ hours, with moderate to strong sillage and strong projection; how long it lasts on you depends on skin and climate. Our Mykonos Penthouse review goes into detail.

Mykonos Baby Love is the gentler one: musk in the top and the base, violet in every layer and rose in the top and heart. The brand calls it a luxurious remake of baby cologne for adults. It is an eau de parfum with a light intensity, moderate sillage and projection and a rated longevity of 9+ hours; see the Mykonos Baby Love review. Both are part of our musky collection.

Musk under citrus

In three citrus extraits listed for him, musk is the quiet finish. Mykonos Empire ends lime, bergamot, ginger and coconut water on patchouli, white musk and tonka bean. Mykonos Inception sets bergamot, ginger and black tea on guaiac wood, musk and cedarwood. Mykonos Sorrento, whose accord is listed as citrus, fresh spicy and musky, settles its fizzy grapefruit into musk, cedar, amber, patchouli and orris root. Mykonos rates Empire and Inception at 12+ hours and Sorrento at 10+ hours.

Musk under milk

Mykonos Milk Drops uses white musk for comfort rather than freshness: milk and a floral bouquet on tonka bean, white musk and white wood, with an accord listed as lactonic, floral and musky. It is unisex, and Mykonos rates its longevity at 12+ hours.

How to choose a musk perfume

Start from the effect you want. For a freshly washed feel, look for white or clean musks next to soap, aldehydes or tea, as in Penthouse. For something soft and powdery, Baby Love. For a fresh scent with a smooth finish, one of the three citrus scents. For a cosy, milky scent, Milk Drops. Then give it time on your skin: musk shows itself in the drydown, not in the first minutes. More clean-smelling options are in our guide to perfume that smells clean.

Frequently asked questions

Is musk a masculine or a feminine note?

Neither. Musk appears in perfumes for him, for her and unisex alike; of the six above, three are listed for him, two are unisex and one for her.

What is the difference between musk and white musk?

"Musk" is the general term. "White musk" points to the cleanest, most cottony and soapy kind. A pyramid that simply says "musk" can still smell clean; the surrounding notes decide.

Does musk last long in a perfume?

Musk materials fade slowly, so the musky part of a scent is usually the last to go. How long a whole perfume lasts depends on its composition, your skin and the climate.
