Oakmoss Perfume: What Does Oakmoss Smell Like?

Oakmoss Perfume: What Does Oakmoss Smell Like?

Quick answer: Oakmoss smells earthy, damp and green, like a forest floor, with a slightly salty, leathery edge. It is the classic base of the chypre family of perfumes, where it puts a dark, mossy ground under bright citrus and flowers. Mykonos lists oakmoss in at least two perfumes and plain moss in at least six.

What does an oakmoss perfume smell like, and why do so many note lists say just "moss"? This guide explains the note, the chypre family it belongs to and the difference between oakmoss and moss on a Mykonos pyramid, then goes through at least eight perfumes that carry one or the other. We are an authorized Mykonos retailer for Europe; the notes and ratings come from the brand's product data and handbook, and the rest is general perfumery knowledge.

What does an oakmoss perfume smell like?

Oakmoss is a lichen that grows on oak trees, and the smell follows from that: earthy, damp and green, like a forest floor, with a slightly salty, leathery edge. Think of shaded bark, wet stone and moss on a north-facing wall. It is not sweet and not floral. In a perfume it works as the dark ground that the other notes stand on.

Because it is a base note, you rarely smell it in the first minutes. It shows later, as the citrus and flowers above it fade, and it keeps the end of a scent cool, green and a little bitter rather than sweet.

What is a chypre perfume, and where does oakmoss fit?

Oakmoss is best known as the base of the chypre family. A classic chypre has a clear shape: bright citrus on top, flowers in the heart and a mossy, woody base. The citrus gives the lift, the base gives the depth, and the contrast between the two is what makes chypre scents feel composed and a little cool. Chypre is a perfumer's term rather than one of the six families we sort the range into (see fragrance families explained); it cuts across them.

Mykonos names a chypre accord in the base of Mykonos Reflection Elixir, under grapefruit, bergamot, ginger and rhubarb leaves, with ylang-ylang, peach and magnolia in the heart. That is the chypre shape in a modern, light form: citrus above and a deeper accord below. Mykonos does not list oakmoss in it, though.

Moss or oakmoss on a Mykonos note list?

A note list names an impression, not a raw material, and the Mykonos pyramids use two spellings of it. Oakmoss is listed in at least two perfumes and plain "moss" in at least six more; the next section names them. We do not treat the two as one: below, the second group is "listed as moss". Together they make at least eight perfumes with a mossy note.

Oakmoss in the Mykonos range

Listed as oakmoss: Inferno and Blaze

Mykonos Inferno is the clearest case. Its base lists patchouli, oakmoss, amber, musk, vetiver, tonka bean and ambroxan, under blackcurrant, bergamot, grapefruit and caramelised pineapple, with clove, nutmeg, ginger, cardamom and rose in the heart. Mykonos lists the accord as fruity, spicy and mossy and the scent for summer, and gives no sillage, projection or longevity rating. Our Mykonos Inferno review has the full verdict. Mykonos Blaze is an eau de parfum listed for him, with grapefruit, marine notes and mandarin orange on top, jasmine and bay leaf in the heart, and ambergris, patchouli, oakmoss and guaiac wood in the base. Mykonos gives no accord or ratings for it.

Listed as moss: six more

Moss appears in Mykonos California Blue, Mykonos Dreamscape, Mykonos Monaco Royale, Mykonos Constantine, Mykonos Sansa and Mykonos x Jumbo Once Upon Don. In five of them it is a base note; only Sansa has moss in the top, next to peach, black tea and osmanthus.

California Blue sets moss under pink salt, lavender, pear and marine notes, with soft wood and caramel beside it, which gives a summer scent a cool, green floor. Monaco Royale and Dreamscape put moss under sweetness: caramel with pear and melon in Monaco Royale, tonka bean and grey amber with mango and praline in Dreamscape. Monaco Royale also appears in our woody and musky fragrances compared. Constantine is the green, aromatic one, with cardamom, violet leaf, lavender and artemisia over amberwood, moss and white musk; our Mykonos Constantine review goes into it.

Perfume Moss sits in Mykonos accord Longevity (Mykonos rating)
California Blue Base Citrus, aquatic, green 10+ hours
Dreamscape Base Fruity, tropical, fresh spicy 12+ hours
Monaco Royale Base Fruity, woody, vanilla 12+ hours
Constantine Base Aromatic, green, floral No rating
Sansa Top None given No rating
Once Upon Don Base None given No rating

The ratings are the brand's own handbook figures; how long a scent lasts on you depends on skin and climate.

How to choose a mossy perfume

Choose by what the moss sits under. Pink salt and marine notes, as in California Blue (listed for summer), give the cool, fresh version. Pear, melon and caramel, as in Monaco Royale (spring and summer), or mango and praline, as in Dreamscape (autumn and winter), let the moss keep the sweetness in check. Cardamom, violet leaf and lavender, as in Constantine (spring and summer), go green and aromatic.

If you want moss in a deep, spicy base, Inferno carries it together with patchouli and vetiver; our guides to what patchouli smells like and what vetiver smells like cover those two. You can browse everything in our all perfumes collection and filter by note.

Frequently asked questions

Does moss in a perfume mean oakmoss?

Not necessarily. A note list names an impression, and Mykonos writes "oakmoss" in two perfumes and plain "moss" in six. We do not treat them as one, which is why this guide says "listed as moss" for the second group.

Is oakmoss a base note?

In the Mykonos range, yes. Inferno and Blaze both list oakmoss in the base, and five of the six perfumes that list moss place it in the base too. Sansa is the exception, with moss in the top.

Is an oakmoss perfume old-fashioned?

The note has an old reputation because it anchors the classic chypre. In the Mykonos range it turns up under pink salt and marine notes, pear and caramel, or mango and praline, so it does not have to read as vintage.

Is oakmoss a masculine or feminine note?

Neither, because the note has no gender. Of the eight perfumes in this guide, seven are listed as unisex in our store and Blaze is listed for him.

Which Mykonos perfume is the most mossy?

We cannot rank them, because the handbook gives no rating for it. Inferno is the only one of the eight where Mykonos names mossy in the accord: fruity, spicy and mossy.
