What Does Sandalwood Smell Like in Perfume?

What Does Sandalwood Smell Like in Perfume?

Quick answer: Sandalwood smells creamy, soft and gently woody, a little like warm milk and polished wood, and it is rounder and smoother than cedar or vetiver. In perfume it is a base note that makes florals, spice and vanilla feel smoother. At least 12 Mykonos perfumes list it in their pyramid.

What does sandalwood smell like, and why does it turn up on so many note lists next to coffee, rose and cinnamon? Because it is the soft part of a scent: you rarely smell "sandalwood" as such, you smell how round and creamy everything around it has become. This guide explains how sandalwood smells, how it differs from other woods, what it does in a composition and how it appears in six Mykonos perfumes. We are an authorized Mykonos retailer for Europe; the notes and ratings come from the brand's product data and handbook, and the rest is general perfumery knowledge.

What does sandalwood smell like?

Think of warm milk, soft polished wood and a faint creamy sweetness. Sandalwood is smooth where cedarwood is dry and rounded where vetiver is earthy, and it never smells sharp. Perfumers use it more for texture than for a recognisable "wood" smell, which is why people tend to call a sandalwood perfume soft, warm or comforting rather than simply woody.

Wood note Smells like Texture
Sandalwood Warm milk, soft polished wood Creamy, smooth
Cedarwood Pencil shavings, dry planks Dry, clean, straight
Vetiver Roots, dry grass, a trace of smoke Earthy, green
Guaiac wood Smouldering wood, slightly sweet Smoky, soft

If the dry side of that table is what you are after, our guide to what cedarwood smells like covers it.

What does sandalwood do in a perfume?

  • It rounds things off. Next to rose, jasmine or violet it adds a creamy cushion. Next to cinnamon, saffron or dark fruit it takes some of the edge off the spice.
  • It smooths sweetness. With vanilla, praline or tonka bean, sandalwood makes the sweetness feel soft instead of sugary.
  • It stays. Wood notes fade slowly, so sandalwood belongs to the drydown, usually under musk and amber. Our guide to top, heart and base notes explains the order.
  • It does not announce itself. A pyramid only says "sandalwood"; what you smell depends on the notes around it.

In at least 12 Mykonos perfumes sandalwood is part of the pyramid. In ten of those twelve it is a base note; in two it moves up into the heart, and we show both below.

Sandalwood perfume from Mykonos: six scents with sandalwood

These six show the note in very different company.

California Club Base, with amberwood and ambrette Bergamot, lemon, rose, violet, iris

Aphrodite Heart, with cedarwood and tonka bean Jasmine, burnt cinnamon, myrrh, tobacco

Sandalwood with coffee, chocolate and spice

Mykonos Senja opens with coffee and almond, puts patchouli, chocolate and milk in the heart and settles on sandalwood, chocolate, vetiver and cistus. The milk and the sandalwood make a creamy floor for the dark flavours above, and the brand pictures the finish as a warm hug of sandalwood and cistus. Mykonos rates its sillage as moderate, its projection as moderate to strong and its longevity at 9+ hours; how long it lasts on you depends on skin and climate. It is listed for autumn and winter. If coffee is what draws you in, see our guide to perfumes with coffee notes.

Mykonos Dark Secret keeps its sandalwood in the base under black cherry, saffron, cinnamon, nutmeg and praline, with amber, musk and tonka bean beside it. The wood is the soft floor under the dark fruit. Mykonos rates its sillage and projection as strong and its longevity at 12+ hours. Mykonos Aphrodite moves sandalwood up into the heart, beside cedarwood and tonka bean, with jasmine, burnt cinnamon and myrrh above and white musk, tobacco, vanilla and mineral amber below, so the creamy wood cushions the smoke. Mykonos rates its sillage and projection as strong and its longevity at 12+ hours. We set the two side by side in Mykonos Dark Secret vs Aphrodite.

Sandalwood with flowers and fruit

Mykonos Sparkling Rosé lists sandalwood in the heart, beside May rose, sparkling red berries and plum, under damask rose, orange and geranium. Patchouli, amber, guaiac wood and musk follow in the base. Here the creamy wood sits right under the rose instead of far below it. Mykonos describes the scent as rich, velvety and wrapped in elegant woods, rates its sillage as moderate to strong and its projection as strong, and gives its longevity as 10+ hours.

Mykonos California Club is the quietest use of the note in this list. Bergamot, lemon and violet leaf lead, rose, violet and iris form the heart, and sandalwood joins amberwood and ambrette in the base to round off the finish. Mykonos lists it for spring and summer as a citrus, floral and woody scent and rates its sillage as moderate, its projection as moderate to strong and its longevity at 9+ hours.

Mykonos Pink Beach is an eau de parfum for summer: kiwi, rhubarb and pink pepper over jasmine, watermelon and cyclamen, then powdery notes, sandalwood, tonka bean, cedar, musk and juniper berries. Sandalwood is one of six base notes there, a soft cushion under the fruit. Mykonos lists the accord as fruity, fresh and powdery and rates its longevity at 9+ hours.

How to choose a sandalwood perfume

Choose by what sits with the sandalwood. For a warm, sweet scent for cold evenings, look at Senja or Dark Secret. For something smokier, Aphrodite. For roses and fruit, Sparkling Rosé, which is listed for all four seasons. For warm days, California Club and Pink Beach keep the wood light. The full list is in our sandalwood perfumes collection, and our guide to woody perfumes for women has more ideas.

Frequently asked questions

Is sandalwood sweet?

Gently. It smells creamy and milky rather than sugary, and in our range it picks up sweetness from its company: chocolate and milk in Senja, praline and cherry in Dark Secret.

What is the difference between sandalwood and cedarwood?

Sandalwood is creamy and soft; cedarwood is dry and pencil-like. Sandalwood rounds a scent, cedarwood sharpens it. Aphrodite lists both in the heart.

Is sandalwood a masculine or feminine note?

Neither. The note has no gender. In our store four of the six perfumes above are listed as unisex and two as for her.

Is sandalwood a base note?

Mostly. In ten of the twelve Mykonos perfumes we checked it sits in the base; in Aphrodite and Sparkling Rosé it is a heart note.
