What Are Aldehydes in Perfume? The Fizzy, Soapy Note Explained - Mykonos

Quick answer: Aldehydes are a group of aroma materials that give a perfume a fizzy, soapy, clean-laundry sparkle. They do not smell of a particular flower or fruit; they lift and brighten the notes around them, mostly in the opening. In our range they are in the pyramid of three perfumes: Untamed, Penthouse and MyEgo.

What are aldehydes in perfume? The word looks like chemistry homework in the middle of a list of fruits and flowers, and it tells you less than "lemon" or "rose" does. The short version: aldehydes are what makes a perfume smell like clean laundry. This guide explains what they are, what they smell like, how they behave in a composition and what they do in the three Mykonos perfumes that list them. We are an authorized Mykonos retailer for Europe; the notes and ratings come from the brand's product data and handbook, and the rest is general perfumery knowledge.

What are aldehydes in perfume?

"Aldehyde" is the name of a family of aroma materials. On a note list the word refers to a particular group of them with a sparkling, waxy-clean character. Some of these materials also occur in nature, for instance in citrus peel, which is one reason they sit so easily next to lemon and bergamot.

A pyramid that says "aldehydes" is naming an effect, the way "musk" or "amber" does. "Aldehydic" is the adjective: a perfume in which that sparkle is clearly noticeable. Our fragrance notes glossary explains more terms of this kind.

What do aldehydes smell like?

  • Fizzy: the prickle of sparkling water.
  • Soapy: a fresh bar of white soap.
  • Clean laundry: cotton under a hot iron, sheets straight from the line.
  • Waxy: a candle that has just been blown out.
  • Cool and airy: cold morning air with a slight edge of citrus peel.

The dose decides which of these you get. A little adds a lift you would not be able to name; a lot makes a perfume distinctly soapy and powdery.

How aldehydes behave in a composition

Aldehydes belong to the top of a perfume. They are there in the first minutes and are among the first notes to fade; our guide to top, heart and base notes explains that order. In that short time they do three things:

  • They diffuse. The opening feels bigger and brighter, as if someone had opened a window.
  • They blur outlines. Fruit and flowers become less literal, so you smell "clean" rather than "blackcurrant" or "rose".
  • They hand over. The clean impression they set up is carried on by soap accords and musk in the heart and base. Without those, the freshness would leave with the top notes.

Aldehydes are sometimes called old-fashioned, because many people know them from classic soapy, powdery florals. Next to fruit, linen accords and clean musks the same materials read as modern fresh laundry, and that is how Mykonos uses them.

Aldehydes in the Mykonos range: three perfumes

Only three of the 77 perfumes in our store list aldehydes, all in the top and all in unisex extraits. What comes after them is different each time.

Perfume Aldehydes sit next to What follows Effect
Untamed Blackcurrant, bergamot, lemon, crisp linen accord Praline, coconut soap accord, cedarwood, vanilla Clean linen over a creamy heart
Penthouse Sparkling blackcurrant, mandarin zest, rose mist White soap accord, white tea vapour, clean musks Soap and a warm bath
MyEgo Muscat grapes, pink pepper, bergamot Amber, jasmine, geranium, musk, vanilla Clean fruit with amber warmth

Untamed: aldehydes and linen

In Mykonos Untamed the aldehydes stand beside a crisp linen accord, so the opening says "fresh laundry" at once. Underneath is a praline heart with a coconut soap accord; as its description puts it, the aldehydes and linen lift that heart, so a sweet composition wears like a fresh one for the first hour. It is listed for spring and summer and comes in 100 ml. The full pyramid is in our guide to the Mykonos Untamed notes.

Penthouse: aldehydes and soap

Mykonos Penthouse goes furthest in the soapy direction. The brand describes its aldehydes as airy, and they lead into a white soap accord, white tea vapour and clean musks: "clean, soapy, luminous" is how Mykonos sums it up. It is listed for all four seasons, and Mykonos rates its longevity at 12+ hours, with moderate to strong sillage and strong projection; how long it lasts on you depends on skin and climate. It is part of our musky collection, and the Mykonos Penthouse review covers it in detail. For the two side by side, see Mykonos Untamed vs Penthouse.

MyEgo: aldehydes and fruit

Mykonos MyEgo uses aldehydes to keep a fruity scent crisp. Muscat grapes, pink pepper and bergamot share the top with them, amber, jasmine and geranium follow, and musk, vanilla, transparent wood and Iso E Super close it. Mykonos calls it fruity-aldehydic and lists its accord as fruity, clean and ambery. It is listed for autumn and winter, with strong sillage and projection and a rated longevity of 12+ hours. We compare it with the first of the three in Mykonos Untamed vs MyEgo.

Will you like an aldehydic perfume?

If you like the smell of fresh laundry, soap or an ironed shirt, almost certainly. Choose Penthouse for the full soap effect, Untamed if you want something creamy underneath, and MyEgo for fruit and amber in the colder months. Judge all three after the opening as well: the aldehydes are strongest in the first minutes, and what follows differs a lot. More scents in this style are in our guide to perfume that smells clean.

Frequently asked questions

What does an aldehyde smell like?

Fizzy, soapy and clean, like sparkling water, white soap and freshly ironed cotton, with a slightly waxy edge.

Are aldehydes natural or synthetic?

The aldehydes perfumers use are aroma materials made for the fragrance industry. Some of the same substances also occur in nature, for example in citrus peel. A note list does not say which source was used.

Do aldehydes make a perfume smell old-fashioned?

Not by themselves. In a large dose with powdery florals they give a classic soapy style; with fruit, linen and musk they smell like clean laundry.

How long do aldehydes last in a perfume?

They are top notes, so they fade early. The clean feeling stays longer when soap accords and musks in the heart and base take it over, as in the three perfumes above.
