Quick answer: Bergamot smells sparkling, bitter-sweet and slightly floral: a softer, rounder citrus than lemon, and the note that gives Earl Grey tea its character. In perfume it is nearly always a top note, so it opens the scent and is the first thing to fade. At least 23 Mykonos perfumes list bergamot, and six of them are walked through below.
What does bergamot smell like, and why is it in so many perfumes? Bergamot is a citrus fruit, and its peel gives a bright, slightly floral, bitter-sweet smell that is less sharp than lemon. Most people have met it in Earl Grey tea. This guide covers how bergamot smells, how it differs from other citrus notes and how it appears in six Mykonos perfumes. We are an authorized Mykonos retailer for Europe; the notes and ratings come from the brand's product data and handbook, and the rest is general perfumery knowledge.
What does bergamot smell like?
Think of citrus zest rather than juice. Bergamot opens bright and sparkling, turns slightly bitter and settles on a soft floral sweetness. The bitter edge keeps it elegant instead of sugary, and the floral touch is why it gets on so well with flowers, tea and woods. If you have ever smelled a cup of Earl Grey, you already know the character. Our guide to tea perfumes shows how perfumers use that link on purpose.
How is bergamot different from lemon, orange and grapefruit?
A pyramid often lists several citrus notes side by side, and each does a different job.
| Citrus note | Smells like | Character |
|---|---|---|
| Bergamot | Zest with a hint of flowers and tea | Sparkling, bitter-sweet, rounded |
| Lemon | Sharp, clean zest | Crisp and direct |
| Orange | Juicy, sweet peel | Warm and friendly |
| Grapefruit | Tart, juicy, slightly bitter | Fizzy and bold |

Is bergamot a top note, and why does it fade first?
In perfume, bergamot is nearly always a top note. It is light and volatile, so it reaches your nose in the first moments after spraying and is the first note to leave. That is its job: it is the opening line that the heart and base then answer. Every one of the 23 Mykonos perfumes we counted lists it in the top layer. If the order of top, heart and base is new to you, fragrance notes explained walks through it.
What a perfume feels like once the bergamot has gone depends on what sits underneath. Three pairings come up again and again:
- Bergamot with spice or tea. Ginger, black tea or black pepper turn the sparkle into something drier and more grown-up.
- Bergamot with flowers. Its own slightly floral side links naturally to jasmine, violet and rose.
- Bergamot with woods or musk. A base of cedarwood, amber or musk gives the citrus something to rest on, so the scent does not vanish with the top notes.
Bergamot in the Mykonos range
At least 23 Mykonos perfumes list bergamot, always in the top. Mykonos Glitch lists Sicilian bergamot and one more perfume lists Calabrian bergamot; those are the names as listed, and we do not read more into them. These six show the note in different company.
| Perfume | Listed with the bergamot | Mykonos longevity rating |
|---|---|---|
| Inception | Ginger, orange, lemon; black tea and neroli in the heart | 12+ hours |
| Satin Blanc | Black pepper, green apple; jasmine tea in the heart | 12+ hours |
| California Club | Lemon, violet leaf; rose, violet and iris in the heart | 9+ hours |
| Sorrento | Fizzy grapefruit, mandarin orange, ginger | 10+ hours |
| Glitch | Apple, grapefruit, charred pineapple | 12+ hours |
| Crimson | Poached peach crème, cherry nectar | 10+ hours |
The last column is the brand's handbook rating. How long a perfume lasts on you depends on skin and climate.
Bergamot with tea and pepper
Mykonos Inception is the clearest example. Bergamot, ginger, orange and lemon open it, and black tea, neroli and cinnamon follow in the heart, so the Earl Grey link is easy to find. Guaiac wood, musk and cedarwood in the base carry the scent after the citrus has gone. Mykonos rates its longevity at 12+ hours and lists it for spring and summer; our Mykonos Inception review has the full picture. Mykonos Satin Blanc pairs bergamot with black pepper and green apple, then jasmine tea and cedarwood: crisp and lightly peppery rather than sweet.
Bergamot with flowers
Mykonos California Club is where the floral side of bergamot gets the stage. Bergamot, lemon and violet leaf open it, rose, violet and iris form the heart, and amberwood, ambrette and sandalwood sit underneath. Mykonos lists it for spring and summer and rates its sillage as moderate.
Bergamot with grapefruit and fruit
Mykonos Sorrento puts bergamot beside fizzy grapefruit, mandarin and ginger for a brighter, more sparkling opening. Glitch is the one that names the variety: Sicilian bergamot over apple, grapefruit and charred pineapple, with lavender and pink pepper in the heart. Mykonos lists it for summer.
Mykonos Crimson uses bergamot as a small bright lift. It sits third in the top, behind poached peach crème and cherry nectar, and the brand's description says it brightens their sweetness. Mykonos lists Crimson for autumn and winter evenings, which shows that bergamot is not only for fresh scents: in a sweet perfume it keeps the fruit from feeling heavy.
How do you choose a bergamot perfume?
Bergamot is in so many pyramids that the note alone does not narrow things down. Choose by what stands next to it.
- Fresh and easy: bergamot with other citrus and ginger, as in Sorrento.
- Dry and polished: bergamot with tea or pepper, as in Inception and Satin Blanc.
- Soft and floral: bergamot with rose, violet and iris, as in California Club.
- Warm and sweet: bergamot lifting fruit, as in Crimson.
Our bergamot perfumes collection brings together the perfumes with this note, and the citrus collection is the place for scents where citrus leads.
Frequently asked questions
Does bergamot smell like Earl Grey tea?
Yes, that is the quickest way to describe it: bergamot is the citrus note in Earl Grey. In a perfume it is brighter and more floral than in a cup, and it fades faster.
Is bergamot sweet or sour?
Bitter-sweet. It is less sharp than lemon and less tart than grapefruit, with a bitter edge that stops it from smelling of sugar.
Is bergamot a masculine or feminine note?
Neither. Among the six perfumes above, three are listed for him and three as unisex.
How long does a bergamot perfume last?
The bergamot itself fades first, so what lasts is the rest of the composition. Mykonos rates the six perfumes above between 9+ and 12+ hours for longevity, and how long they last on you depends on skin and climate.
