What Does Cashmeran Smell Like? Cashmere Wood Explained - Mykonos

Quick answer: Cashmeran smells soft, warm and musky-woody with a touch of spice, and people often describe it as velvety, like cashmere wool. "Cashmere wood" is the name brands commonly give to that effect, and at least 12 Mykonos perfumes list one of the two names.

What does cashmeran smell like, and how does it relate to the "cashmere wood" that appears on so many note lists? Both names point to a soft, velvety woody-musk effect that is easier to feel than to name. This guide explains what cashmeran is, how it behaves in a composition and how the two names show up in six Mykonos perfumes. We are an authorized Mykonos retailer for Europe; the notes and ratings come from the brand's product data and handbook, and the rest is general perfumery knowledge.

What does cashmeran smell like?

Soft, warm and musky-woody, with a faint spicy edge. The word people reach for most is velvety, like the feel of cashmere wool rather than any real smell of it. Cashmeran does not smell of a flower, a fruit or a wood you could point to; it smells of softness. That is why people rarely say a perfume "smells of cashmeran"; they say it feels smooth, warm and clean.

Soft base note Smells like Feel
Cashmeran Soft musky wood with a touch of spice Velvety, warm
Musk Clean skin, fresh laundry Soft, skin-close
Sandalwood Warm milk, polished wood Creamy, smooth
Cedarwood Pencil shavings, dry planks Dry, clean

Two of its neighbours in that table have their own guides: what musk smells like and what sandalwood smells like.

What is cashmeran in perfume?

Cashmeran is an aroma molecule, a perfumery material with a soft, warm, musky-woody and slightly spicy smell. "Cashmere wood" is the name brands commonly give to the effect it creates. On our note lists you will find both: Cashmeran in three perfumes and Cashmere Wood in ten. Mykonos Penthouse lists both, so at least 12 different perfumes carry one of the two.

A pyramid does not tell you which material a perfume uses, so we cannot say what sits behind each name. In this guide we treat the two as describing one family of effect: a soft, velvety, woody musk.

How cashmeran behaves in a composition

  • It softens. Under a bright or sharp opening it adds a velvety floor, so the scent does not feel thin once the top notes have gone.
  • It bridges woods and musk. Sitting between the two, it ties cedarwood, amber and musk together into one smooth finish.
  • It is a supporting note. Nine of the twelve perfumes list it in the base and four in the heart; Penthouse uses one name in each. Our guide to top, heart and base notes explains the order.

Cashmeran and cashmere wood in the Mykonos range

These six show the two names in different company.

Perfume Name and layer Around it
Penthouse Cashmere Wood in the heart, Cashmeran in the base Aldehydes, white tea, soap accord, clean musks
Untamed Cashmeran in the base Praline, musk, vanilla, black amber
Invade Cashmeran in the heart Pink pepper, lavender, cinnamon bark, caramel
Luminos Cashmere Wood in the base White florals, banana accord, amberwood
Coconut Dreams Cashmere Wood in the base Coconut, vanilla, sweet rice
Stilettos Cashmere Wood in the base Blackberry, sour cherry, violet, amber

Cashmeran in clean, soapy scents

Penthouse is the only one of the six that lists both names: Cashmere Wood and cedarwood in the heart, Cashmeran in the base beside clean musks, amber and tonka bean. Above them sit aldehydes, sparkling blackcurrant and mandarin zest, then white tea vapour and a white soap accord; the brand compares the whole to a luxurious bath. Mykonos rates its sillage as moderate to strong, its projection as strong and its longevity at 12+ hours; how long it lasts on you depends on skin and climate. Our Mykonos Penthouse review goes through the notes.

Mykonos Untamed puts cashmeran at the end of a long base of black amber, cedarwood, vetiver, musk and vanilla, under a praline heart and a clean top of blackcurrant, aldehydes and a crisp linen accord. Mykonos describes sparkling aldehydes, smooth musks and velvety woods, lists it for spring and summer and gives no rating for its sillage, projection or longevity. See our Mykonos Untamed review.

Cashmeran with spice

Mykonos Invade is the one scent in this list that puts cashmeran in the heart, beside cinnamon bark and caramel, between a top of pink pepper, lavender absolute and juniper and a base of amber, Madagascar vanilla and dry woods. Mykonos describes it as opening fresh and spicy and ending in a smooth, smouldering finish. It rates sillage and projection as moderate to strong and longevity at 10+ hours, and lists it for autumn and winter.

Cashmere wood in creamy and fruity scents

Mykonos Luminos lists Cashmere Wood in the base with amber, amberwood and ice cream notes, under white florals such as rose, tuberose, lily of the valley and orange blossom, and an apple and banana top. Mykonos lists it for spring and summer and rates sillage and projection as strong and longevity at 12+ hours.

Mykonos Coconut Dreams ends on vanilla and Cashmere Wood, under coconut cream, vanilla and sweet rice, with coconut, aloe vera and lily of the valley on top. The brand calls it a creamy, nutty vanilla scent that is not a typical tropical summer fragrance. Mykonos rates its sillage as moderate, its projection as moderate to strong and its longevity at 8+ hours.

Mykonos Stilettos is an eau de parfum: blackberry, sour cherry and mandarin orange on top, violet and jasmine in the heart, then Cashmere Wood, amber, patchouli, musk and vanilla. Mykonos lists it for autumn and winter and rates sillage and projection as moderate and longevity at 7+ hours.

How to choose a cashmeran perfume

Choose by the company the soft wood keeps. For a clean, soapy finish, look at Penthouse and Untamed. For warm spice and caramel, Invade. For something creamy and sweet, Luminos or Coconut Dreams. For dark fruit over a soft base, Stilettos. To browse more soft, woody-musky scents, try our musky and woody and vanilla collections.

Frequently asked questions

Are cashmeran and cashmere wood one and the same note?

A note list does not say which material sits behind each name, so we cannot tell you for any single perfume. Both point to a soft, velvety woody-musk effect, and we treat them as one family. Penthouse lists both.

Does cashmeran smell like cashmere?

Not literally. Cashmere is a fabric; cashmeran is a scent that people describe as velvety, warm and musky-woody.

Is cashmeran a woody or a musky note?

Both. It sits between the two: woody in its warmth, musky in its softness, with a slight spice.

Is cashmeran a masculine or feminine note?

Neither. In our store, of the six perfumes above three are listed as unisex, one for him and two for her.
